548 – Harlequins stars swap rugby boots for racing shoes

26 January 2011

READERS of this blog are probably aware that I’m something of a Harlequins rugby fan. So when I saw this story I was particularly interested!

Three of Harlequins’ top rugby stars – All Blacks’ fly half Nick Evans, back row Will Skinner and captain Chris Robshaw – had a chance to grab the wheel of the all-new Alfa Giulietta between training sessions with the oval ball.

Alfa Romeo is Harlequins’ official car supplier, so Evans, Skinner and Robshaw were invited to put their competitiveness to test by driving the 235bhp range-topping Alfa Giulietta Cloverleaf at the world famous Brands Hatch motor racing circuit in Kent.

The players were assessed by Brands Hatch instructors across a variety of disciplines including the ability to drive to instruction, changing gear, taking the racing line, use of power and braking technique.

Those who watch Quins will already be aware of the sheer pace of Evans, whose turn of speed can be electrifying. So a fly-half against two flankers? There was only going to be one winner.

“I’m not sure Will and Chris are happy but ultimately it was no contest, the best man won!” said Nick afterwards. “With each lap I gained more and more confidence and got faster and faster across all parts of the track. It was a great day and we thoroughly enjoyed putting the Giulietta’s through their paces – they can certainly handle.”

Let’s hope the same competitive spirit comes to the fore in the special match this Sunday being held in Abu Dhabi when London Wasps hosts Harlequins in the LV=Cup.

C’mon you Quins!
