THIS is what the next-generation Ford Focus looks like: a more dynamic interpretation of the original Mk1 first launched in 1998 – welcome after the less adventurous Mk2 model currently on sale.
Ford Focus Mk3 has been launched at the North American Motor Show in Detroit, USA. The reason? Because the Focus is a ‘global’ car. And will be built in Europe, the US and China to the same formula.
Which means Ford’s captivating blend of practicality and driving appeal. There’s a new cockpit style interior with the promise of a premium-style quality, and updated suspension – including the ‘control blade’ rear suspension from the current car – to provide a high level of driver involvement.
Engines will include Ford’s new range of EcoBoost petrol engines – smaller capacity units with turbocharging for performance and economy – along with improved TDCi diesel engines. All engines are said to provide a 20% improvement on current fuel economy.
“The efficiencies generated by our new global C-car platform will enable us to provide Ford Focus customers with an affordable product offering quality, fuel efficiency, safety and technology beyond their expectations,” commented Ford global chief Alan Mulally.
The new Ford Focus will be available as a five-door hatchback and a four-door saloon.
However, if you want a new Ford Focus, you’ll have to wait. The new car will go on sale in the first quarter of 2011. Before then, Ford will launch the people carrier Ford C-MAX and seven-seater Ford Grand C-MAX (launched at the Frankfurt Show) in summer 2010.
