Audi A4 allroad 3.0 TDI quattro 240PS S tronic
What is it?
A TOUGHENED up 4×4 A4 Avant aimed at those who like to wander down the occasional green lane. Audi calls it the allroad. Like its bigger brother, the A6 allroad, this model gets extra plastic cladding, raised suspension (up by 37mm) and an off-road ESP system to help maintain traction. Available in 2.0-litre turbo petrol and diesel trim, or flagship 237bhp 3.0-litre V6 diesel spec, as tested here.
What’s hot?
- Tougher body looks good, raised ride gives a slightly better view…
- …but without the negative connotations of a full-blown SUV
- quattro 4×4 and re-tuned ESP means more than enough off-road ability
- Diesel’s 500Nm of torque equals 0-60mph in 6.4 seconds…
- …and storming mid-range response
- Returns nearly 40mpg
- Amazingly quiet and stable on the motorway
- Plenty of grip around corners
- One of the best cabins in the business
- Big boot has a system of dividers to increase practicality further
- Lots of room in the back
What’s not?
- The price tag. This flagship costs £34,565…
- …and cruise control, satnav and parking sensors are still options
- Seven-speed auto isn’t very smooth at low speed
- Steering feels artificial
- CO2 emissions of 189g/km mean a 28% band…and it will go up
