The Citroen C4 – a hatchback rival to the Ford Focus – has become more tax-efficient following a facelift.

The revised Citroen C4 range has two new low-CO2 petrol engines and a diesel that emits just 117g/km.

The two new petrol engines have been co-developed with BMW. In the C4 hatchback, the new 120bhp 1.6 16v VTi petrol is rated at 42.2mpg and 159g/km. It is priced from £14,695.

The second new petrol is the turbocharged 150bhp 1.6 16v THP. Available in the coupe only, it’s rated at 40.9mpg and 164g/km.

The diesels are likely to prove more popular with businesses. In the C4 hatchback, the diesel engines are:

    • 1.6 HDi 92bhp: 64.2mpg, 117g/km, from £15,295
    • 1.6 HDi 110bhp: 58.8mpg, 128g/km, from £16,195
    • 2.0 HDi 140bhp: 53.3mpg, 140g/km, from £18,895

These are for manual variants. An automatic 2.0 HDi and semi-auto EGS 1.6 HDi 110 are also available.

As part of the facelift, the Citroen C4 has gained a new-look C5-style front end. Inside, there’s more upmarket plastic for the dash and door trims. The rev counter has been moved to the translucent central display.

The C4 retains its good roster of technology and safety equipment. The C4 is now also available with Citroen’s latest navigation system, NaviDrive. This features a high-resolution 7in colour screen, Europe-wide satellite navigation, real-time traffic reports and an audio system with 30GB hard drive and USB hook-up.

Prices for the revised C4 hatchback span £12,695 to £19,895.
