Lotus Evora road test report

Lotus Evora

Lotus Evora

What is it?

BEAUTIFUL, lightweight race car for the road aimed at the Porsche Boxster crowd. The Evora’s 3.5-litre, six-cylinder, mid-mounted engine generates 276bhp and 350Nm. Priced from £48,885.

What’s hot?

  • Supercar looks universally admired
  • Feels ‘right’ from the off – superb seats and handling
  • From a standing start: 0-62 in 5.1 seconds
  • Amazing sound track from V6 engine
  • Exclusivity compared to the big brand competitors
  • ‘Grown up’ supercar compared to the Lotus Elise
  • Can be ordered in a 2+2 spec
  • 160 litre boot can still take two sets of golf clubs

What’s not?

  • Expensive – the Lotus Elise starts at £26,760
  • Tyre noise at motorway speeds
  • CO2 emissions 205g/km, so stiff taxes and slow write-downs

Business Car Manager Road Test Rating

Lotus launched the Evora in 2009, yet it remains a very rare sight on British roads. It ticks the ‘beauty, exclusivity and talking points-with-clients’ emphatically. It also offers a mind-blowing drive with lots of aural theatre from an engaging V6 engine, but crucial practical touches too, such as a good boot and ample ground clearance for speed bumps. But it costs too much to buy when compared to razor sharp competitors such as Porsche’s new Boxster Spyder (£46k) and BMW’s Z4 35i (from £38.5k). Don’t forget that the new, entry-level, 1.6-litre Lotus Elise achieves CO2 emissions of 155g/km, below the crucial level for efficient tax-writedowns in the UK, which makes the Elise a better business car alternative.
