ELECTRIC vehicle owners can now use a newly installed npower rapid charger at Sheffield’s Meadowhall shopping complex, launched as part of the Electric Vehicles Inmotion! scheme that’s being rolled out across South Yorkshire.

Electric Vehicles Inmotion! is a collaboration between energy company, npower, South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) and the South Yorkshire local authorities of Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster.

It is designed to provide South Yorkshire businesses with the opportunity to lease a subsidised plugged-in electric vehicle (EV) and charger with the aim of reducing emissions and improving air quality on the region’s roads.

To support this scheme, a number of rapid charging points are to be installed across South Yorkshire, with Meadowhall being the first.  It is capable of charging an electric vehicle to an 80% charge within 20-30 minutes, enabling visitors to the shopping centre to charge up while they browse.

The charging point was officially unveiled by British motoring journalist and television presenter Jonny Smith, who is currently working on a project to build Europe’s fastest street legal EV, the ‘Flux Capacitor’, sponsored by npower.

Phil Evans, Head of e-mobility at npower, commented: “We are delighted to launch the rapid charging point at what is an iconic South Yorkshire venue – Meadowhall.  It is part of the long-term Electric Vehicles Inmotion! scheme that is designed to help local businesses take advantage of the real sustainable and commercial benefits electric vehicle fleets can bring.

“We are working hard alongside the local councils to ensure the transition to electric powered fleets is smooth and effective, and the infrastructure support required, such as rapid charging points, is essential in this process.

“We have already seen real interest in the scheme and we aim to have up to 40 local companies signed up to Electric Vehicles Inmotion! by March 2015.”
