Ford Mondeo 1.0 Ecoboost Zetec

What is it?

THE latest fourth-generation Mondeo fitted with Ford’s award-winning 125bhp version of the 1.0-litre Ecoboost petrol engine.

At £19,995, without options, it’s also the cheapest Mondeo on sale.

What’s hot?

  • It seems unbelievable that a car as big as the Mondeo could be powered by an engine as small as 998cc, but that’s what we’ve got here and it just shows how far Ford has come with the 1.0-litre Ecoboost petrol engine. For such a small engine, the headline figures of 125bhp and 170Nm of torque are impressive.
  • Refinement is top notch too; you can only hear the distinct thrum of the three-cylinder engine at idle. At speed – even at high revs, it’s almost drowned out by the minimal wind and road noise.
  • Despite the 1.0-litre engine’s performance, this Mondeo is capable of 55.4mpg on the Combined Cycle, with CO2 emissions of just 119g/km.
  • The low CO2 emissions mean the Mondeo 1.0 Ecoboost Zetec falls into the 18% company car tax band for 2015/16.
  • The Mondeo 1.0-litre works best out of town on faster roads, where this engine’s progressive power delivery soon means you’ve built a reasonable wedge of speed. You’ll still have to be careful when overtaking though, as the Ecoboost’s lack of torque means you might have to make as many as two down changes to get safely past.
  • Modern Fords sell on their driving dynamics and even with such a small petrol engine, the Mondeo doesn’t disappoint. In fact with that smaller, lighter petrol engine in the front, it’s an even keener drive than before. The driving highlight has to be the responsive steering.
  • The Mondeo’s exterior styling looks sharp and contemporary; highlights are the Aston-like family grille, those slim headlights and that high waistline.
  • Interior space has always been a Mondeo selling point and the new big Ford doesn’t disappoint. There’s plenty of room front and rear, with 740mm of space for three six-footers to sit comfortably in the back.
  • On top of the impressive interior room, boot space is equally huge.
  • Our Zetec spec test car might be the bread and butter model of the Mondeo range, but it’s still well-equipped with alloy wheels, a DAB radio, LED taillights, dual-zone climate control and cruise control.
