Mike Hawes: sees outlook for car and vans sales as stable, despite the uncertainties of the forthcoming election

WE’VE had a booming March in terms of car and van sales. But will it be sustained? And what might blow sales off course?

We believe car sales will stabilise because car sale growth can’t continue inexorably. For vans there is pent up demand that we are working through.

So given that we’ve had a great first quarter I think we will see a quieter April, because of the Easter holiday break, and then we move into a General Election, so whatever government we get there will be a degree of uncertainty.

Whatever type of government we get, there will be some degree of austerity – so how will business react? But that’s set against a background of economic growth and growing consumer confidence.

In terms of broader geo-political issues there is uncertainty in Russia, but the rest of Europe is picking up.

So, overall we are confident that both the car and van markets will be stable. But stable at a higher level than before.
