Hot to trot in the hatchback race

  • Flagship Leon gains additional 10PS to become 290 PS;
  • 0-62mph sprint of just 5.7secs with auto gearbox;
  • Claimed economy of 42.8mpg and 149g/km of CO2;
  • Precision driving with differential lock, progressive steering, DCC.

THE hot-hatch bragging rights in the company car park have been upped by the new SEAT Leon Cupra which is using a 10PS hike in power to dip below the six-second sprint time barrier.

Now boasting a hairy 290PS, SEAT’s performance flagship uses a 2.0 TSI engine featuring dual injection and variable camshaft timing, married to DCC (Dynamic Chassis Control), front differential lock, progressive steering, CUPRA Drive Profile and standard-fit full-LED headlamps.

But the headline figures from the power upgrade mean the Cupra 290 with optional DSG transmission catapults from 0-62 mph in just 5.7 seconds and in 5.8 seconds with the manual gearbox. Its maximum torque of 350Nm is now available across an even broader rev range from 1,700 to 5,800 rpm and top speed is restricted to 155mph.

Yet BIK paying company car drivers can seek solace in its efficiency claiming 42.8 mpg with DSG transmission and 42.2 mpg in manual. This equates to CO2 figures of just 149 and 156g/km.

The performance of the Leon CUPRA 290 can be raised even further with the optional Sub8 Performance Pack, which includes a set of Brembo brake callipers, an exclusive wheel design and special tyres.
Inside, it boasts chromed trim elements, with high-gloss black available as an option.

Features including sports seats in Alcantara, the Cupra steering wheel and the satellite navigation system with a 6.5-inch colour touchscreen are all among the standard interior features in addition to the extensive base equipment of the Leon FR.
