Managing duty of care with daily rental

Using daily rental could be a life-saver for your staff – and your company. Businesses allowing staff to use their private car on company business could be liable for prosecution should they be involved in an accident. National Car Rental’s Frank Reynolds explains why rental can assist duty of care issues.

Frank Reynolds discusses daily rental and duty of care
Frank Reynolds: daily rental and duty of care explained

By Frank Reynolds, small business specialist, National Car Rental

With the Corporate Manslaughter Bill due to become law in 2008, small businesses should consider daily rental to support their duty of care responsibilities.

It can be a day’s rental to meet an immediate need.

Or three months’ rental to support a seasonal demand.

Either way, daily rental allows businesses to upscale or downsize their small fleet with vehicles exactly suited to the job.

And with no long-term financial commitment.

Supporting duty of care

Many small businesses have little time to manage staff transportation needs. This may put their staff at greater risk of an accident while travelling on company business.

Daily rental is so flexible it makes it a particularly viable solution for small businesses that need staff on the road, but want the certainty they are in safe vehicles.

Right car for the right journey

For example, National’s reservation system offers businesses the flexibility to set agreed car groups for employees to rent, ensuring that any travel policies are adhered to.

Online systems allow business car managers to check vehicle type is appropriate for the task before authorising rental.

There in an emergency

The provision of 24 hour roadside assistance ensures employees are safe in times of distress or difficulty, night or day.

Got it covered

Rental cars can be insured for business use either by National’s insurance or your own company own insurance.

Demand-led provision

If a business car or business van is needed for a matter of days or weeks, short-term rental is the answer. Competitive rental rates cover periods from one to 28 days.

If your business needs transport for temporary or probationary staff to support a seasonal demand then mid- and long-term rental means businesses can enjoy the flexibility of daily rental but at more cost-effective rates.

Daily rental is an effective tool for small businesses – it can help them manage travel policies effectively, making managing duty of care with daily rental a safe bet for both driver and business.
