Fast luxury: the new Mercedes S 63 AMG starts at just under £120,000

MERCEDES has announced specifications and pricing for the sports AMG version of the new S-Class, the S 63 AMG.

The new model goes on sale in the UK in November and starts at £119,565.

The S 63 AMG features a 5.5-litre turbocharged V8 churning out 585 horsepower and – wait for it – 900 Nm of torque.

That’s paired with a seven-speed transmission, a combination that allows the S 63 AMG to rocket to 62 mph in 4.4 seconds on the way to an artificially limited 155 mph.

Chief execs who fancy a bit of this fast luxury may well fancy one of these, but if you’re aiming to have it as your company car, then fuel economy of 27mph and company car tax-unfriendly CO2 emissions of 237 g/km putting it in the 35% company car tax band – not to mention that £120 grand starting price – will put it out of reach for most.

Mercedes has new pricing freedom at the top end of the S-Class range, now it no longer needs to worry about clashing with its now-defunct Maybach models.

But the pricing on the S 63 AMG is still pretty bold – Jaguar and Land Rover, for example, have always been shy about breaching the £100K barrier even with their fanciest cars.
