WHAT do you get if you cross a coupe with a compact SUV? The brand new BMW X2, obviously. Although less obvious is why you would do such a thing.

A compact SUV is supposed to be chunky and robust, versatile and roomy, capable of venturing off road should the need arise. A coupe is none of those things. So why does the BMW X2 intrigue us so?

Essentially the new BMW X2 is a coupe version of the current X1. It’s built on the same wheelbase as the X1 but it’s two centimetres shorter and seven centimetres lower. It also features a new grille that is slightly wider at the bottom to give the X2 a sportier, more distinctive appearance. These things certainly make it look good, as do the sleek roofline and slimline windows, but they won’t be much use if you stray too far from the tarmac.

But we suspect that was never the intention. Try not to think of it as an SUV with coupe styling. It’s more of a coupe with SUV practicality. A coupe with room for stuff. It is, in BMW’s words, a Sports Activity Coupe.

The new BMW X2 will be available in four trim levels – SE, Sport, M Sport, and M Sport X – and with a choice of petrol and diesel engines. While it will initially be sold with just one engine, the 190bhp 20d diesel unit offering up to 61mpg and 121g/km, the rest of the engine range – sDrive20i, X2 sDrive18d and X2 xDrive18d – will be added during 2018.

The interior is typically BMW. There is contrast stitching, and leather upholstery (depending on which trim you choose). It has the same driver focussed cabin, the same choice of trim finishes. Granted it’s a BMW so many of those choices will be optional extras, but even without them it will still be a high quality interior.

What will be standard equipment is the BMW touchscreen navigation system, and the BMW X2 xDrive20d that will initially go on sale also features all-wheel drive as standard. You can add the various BMW option packs as you see fit. The choice of packs – Connected+, Technology, Drive, and Vision – features the usual additions of LED headlights, parking cameras, Active Cruise control, and the like. There is more than enough to configure the new X2 to your personal specification.

The new BMW X2 xDrive20d is available to order from mid-November with prices from £33,980 for the entry-level SE model. Expect the later models to fall either side of that price when they are released next year. Unless of course, you can’t wait that long.
