LAST year America's big three car makers were in all sorts of trouble. Eventually Chrysler married Fiat; GM avoided bankruptcy but wrecked Saab along the way; and Ford, alone, has kept going without state aid. No wonder, then, at the Detroit auto show it was making a big noise about the new Ford Focus, our lead story. The new Focus had better be good, because we have a test of the exceptional new Astra in this issue. But is all the show fuss justified about the new Focus? If the new car proves affordable, practical, well-built and a joy to drive, then it will be. Let's hope, then, that Ford delivers on the fizz.
