WORD has it that Nissan is looking at expanding its sporty Nismo brand in Europe with a Nismo Leaf where currently only the Juke and 270Z carry the badge.

The Japanese car maker is solidifying its position as the world’s top EV producer with the Tokyo unveil of a high performance Nismo version of the Leaf EV and the announcement of plans to enter the Formula E race series.

No decisions have been made yet but according to insiders there is a growing feeling that Nismo resonates with younger people, particularly on the back of the popularity of PlayStation games where Nissan has a strong presence.

A further glimpse into Nissan’s future technology was the reveal of the IMx zero emission concept which can be driven conventionally or switched to fully autonomous mode – in which case the steering wheel retracts and the seats recline.

The concept is 4WD and features twin motors with  an output of 320kw, equal to 430hp and a range of 600kms.

Nissan also unveiled a couple of concepts in Tokyo designed to improve city mobility: the new Paramedic Concept and the all-electric e-NV200 Fridge Concept – yep, Fridge.

Packed with new technologies and features, the new Paramedic Concept is Nissan’s fifth-generation ambulance and builds on the success of the previous versions, which are sold exclusively in Japan. The next-generation is based on the Nissan NV350 Caravan, providing better comfort for the patient and a better work environment for paramedics and drivers.

The ambulance also carries a lithium-ion auxiliary battery that supports life-saving medical equipment when patients are in remote areas or in need of emergency assistance. It also contributes to CO2 reduction, as well as external and internal noise reduction.

The all-electric e-NV200 Fridge Concept’s compact size make it easier to park where large delivery trucks often struggle. There is an additional battery pack in the cargo space to power a refrigeration unit, the Nissan e-Fridge will be able to store chilled foods.
