Ford Mondeo auto diesel: smooth-shifting box
Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCi (140ps) Edge 4dr auto
What is it?
Potentially the most relaxing and best mile-munching Ford Mondeo in the entire range. Durashift automatic transmission comes with five-speeds and adds over £1200 to the price of the Ford Mondeo 2.0-litre diesel. Available as an option on all bodystyles.
What's hot?
- Shifts are very smooth indeed
- Super-long top gear makes for quiet high-speed cruising…
- …but there’s decent kickdown response when you need it
- Quick off the line too, hitting 0-60mph in 10.6 seconds
- Flicking the lever over into manual mode gives a bit more control
- Economy is pretty impressive at 39.8mpg
- Handling, ride and comfort are all class-leading
What's not?
- Emissions are high at 189g/km against the manual’s 156g/km…
- …and it returns almost 48mpg too
- The transmission can hold onto gears for too long
- Lacks the punch and immediacy of its manual brother
- Some diesel clatter at high revs

Business Car Manager Road Test Rating
If you desperately need an automatic, this transmission won’t disappoint. It’s smooth and makes for a stress-free long-distance companion. But for the vast majority of business drivers, the six-speed manual version of the Ford Mondeo makes so much more sense. It’s faster, more economical, costs less to tax and, most importantly of all, it’s a lot cheaper.
