PORSCHE is hoping to take on Tesla as the leader in all-electric premium supercars with the unveiling this week of its Mission E concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

The Mission E is the first all-electrically powered four-seat sports car in the brand’s history. Using a 800-volt drive system, key facts of the sports car include:

  • Four doors and four single seats;
  • More than 600hp of system power;
  • And a driving range or more than 310 miles;
  • All-wheel drive and all-wheel steering;
  • Acce­leration to 62mph in under 3.5secs;
  • Charging time of 15 minutes to reach an 80% charge.

Instruments are intuitively operated by eye-tracking and gesture control, some even via holograms – oriented toward the driver by automatically adjusting the displays to the driver’s position.

The drive system of the Mission E uses two permanently-excited synchronous motors (PSM) – similar to those used in this year’s Le Mans winning 919 hybrid – to accelerate the sports car and recover braking energy.

Porsche claims to be a front-runner in introducing 800-volt technology for the first time. Doubling the voltage of existing EVs offers shorter charging times and lower weight because lighter, smaller gauge copper cables are sufficient for energy transport.

The battery mounted in the car’s underbody, which is based on the latest lithium-ion technology, runs the whole length between the front and rear axles. This distributes its weight to the two drive axles uniformly, resulting in exceptionally good balance. In addition, it makes the sports car’s centre of gravity extremely low.
