RICHARD Crosthwaite, Prestige Car Editor at Glass’s, takes a look at the high and low performers in the prestige car sector over the last few weeks….
HOT
Audi’s great sports car, the Audi R8, is top of the hot list in September, and it’s the V10 5.2 models that are blasting up the road. The one to catch is the Spyder. Availability is limited, and values – particularly on models up to two years old – are strong.
The 4X4 sector is still performing strongly with values slightly up, or flat. SUVs remain in big demand so it’s not hard to see why Bentley, Jaguar and Maserati are all planning SUV launches in the near future. (Click here for more on the Jaguar C-X17.)
But when does market saturation hit – especially since the next few years will see Mercedes, Audi and BMW bring new products forward?
Classic cars have been among the best investments over the past decade according to a range of surveys. This influence has filtered down to modern classics too.
We’ve seen depreciation on many 90s and early 00s cars flatlining – maybe because buyers are being squeezed out of the market for older and therefore pricier cars.
I believe prices of many Bentleys, Aston Martins, Lamborghinis, Ferraris, Porches and Maseratis (plus hot hatches from the same period) have remained static or increased for this very reason.
Low mileage cars with good provenance will always be the best targets for your money. Returns won’t be as spectacular as we’ve seen on cars from the 1950s-1970s but at least the returns will outperform the bank!
