FOR a long time Land Rover has been one of the biggest innovators in off-road technology. For its latest concept though, Land Rover has been showing off some of its latest technologies which aim to improve on-road performance.
Shown off at the New York and Beijing Motor Shows, the Land Rover Discovery Vision Concept has some exciting tech features which offer a tantalising glimpse into the future of Land Rover tech and the technologies that could be with us very soon.
Here’s a run-down of the main technologies showcased in the Land Rover Discovery Vision Concept.
Autonomous driving
For as long as cars have been around, there has been autonomous driving science fiction.
In 2014, though, cars that drive themselves are very real. The Land Rover Discovery Vision Concept has autonomous driving capabilities which allow it to take away the “boring” and “tedious” part of a journey, according to Land Rover.
The concept uses cameras and infrared to judge speed, distance, and reaction times, as well as other technologies highlighted below.
Cloud computing
According to Dr. Wolfgang Epple, the cloud is an essential component of autonomous driving.
The Land Rover Discovery Vision Concept used the cloud to store vehicle data as opposed to storing data on an internal hard drive.
This will gift the car with superior computing power, and it will open up a world of opportunities with regard to media and entertainment. Epple does concede that there will be connectivity and privacy issues with this, but says these would be overcome.
HMI
HMI (Radical Human Machine Interface) is smart glass.
Smart glass is used throughout the Land Rover Discovery Vision Concept; the windscreen, panoramic sunroof, windows; and this glass offers information to anybody who wants to access it.
So, for example the driver could have a head up display whilst passengers in the back could catch up with the latest news. This would be tied in with cloud computing and offer real-time data, according to Farnell Land Rover.
