REMEMBER the Volkswagen Passat CC, or latterly just the CC? It was basically a sharp-looking Passat-based Coupe and this is its replacement – now called the Volkswagen Arteon, taking the fight to BMW’s 4 Series Grand Coupe.

Outside, it’s clear that this new Volkswagen Arteon’s design has been influenced by the 2015 Sport Coupe GTE concept – which also made its debut at the Geneva Show. In our opinion, the finished production car bears more than a passing resemblance to VAG cousin the Audi A7 down the flanks – surely this is more than a coincidence?

Highlights include the large clamshell bonnet, which lays over the front wheel arches and then meets the long LED headlights and also wide, horizontally styled grille.

At the side, there’s a distinct lower cut out. Move to the back and the highlight is the high-set LED rear light clusters and a built-in rear spoiler.

Inside, the Arteon is more of a generic Volkswagen – but there’s still the expected high-quality finish. Interior features include the horizontal air vent that runs from the instruments. Similar to designs already seen in the Passat and Audi A7 there’s also some neat ambient lighting on the doors – adding to the special feel of the Arteon’s interior.

Business tech fans will love the Arteon’s optional Active Info Display digital instrument panel, along with the new range of infotainment systems, ranging from a standard 6.5-inch display to the 9.2-inch Discover Pro setup with gesture control.

Other new driver assistance technology for the Arteon includes new-generation adaptive cruise control and self-steering emergency assist.

This Volkswagen might be a four-door Coupe, but it’s a practical one, with plenty of rear legroom and a 1,557-litre boot with the rear seat folded!

Available later this year in three different versions, the Arteon will be offered with a choice of three petrol and three diesel engines.
