Glass’s Richard Crosthwaite: enjoying his R8 moment

And why Audi’s works driver can’t have an R8

Last week I had the chance to test drive the new Audi R8 V10 (see road test Audi R8: super sports V10).

My driving partner for the day was Richard Crosthwaite from Glass’s Guide. We had a ball – well, who couldn’t in such a car? The locals loved it too. Each time you went through a village, the locals would come out and expect you to blast the engine just to experience the V10 howl. All good fun.

When he’s not driving an R8 with me, Richard is the prestige editor for Glass’s – the essential guide to used car prices. It’s his job to make sure each prestige manufacturer, and each model in the range, is accurately priced.

Richard has just started a new blog. You can read it here – Meet our experts. And each month, we’ll be taking Richard’s views on what’s hot and what’s not in the prestige car market for our new Used Business Cars section.

Later that day, Audi’s works Le Mans driver, Allan McNish, joined us for dinner. Allan is highly personable and very approchable. Apparently Allan had asked Audi for an R8 V10 for his company car. But not even Allan, a Le Mans winner with Audi, could persuade Audi to give him the keys to a V10: “Customers come first,” Allan told us. (I think, almost, through gritted teeth!)

Only 150 models of the R8 V10 are coming to the UK. Which won’t please the extensive list of depositors. But at least those who do get lucky will have an exclusive super car. And, as Richard writes in his blog: “this healthy supply demand scenario will be great for used values.” Certainly will.
