Sean Joyce: minor mistake could mean prosecution under careless driving law

New Road Safety Act measures

I’m always amazed when I see drivers of really upmarket cars, where Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity should be standard, using a hand-held mobile. What’s wrong with them?

The Audi A4 2.0 TDi SE I’m driving has a brilliantly simple Bluetooth set up – even I can work it without calling for the assistance of my tech-savvy son.

But should you be talking hands-free and driving anyway? Mike Parish from Roadsafe told me that it has the same effect on driving as being over the alcohol limit – I was truly taken back by that.

One MD of a small business I know has a simple solution when she’s at the wheel of her Audi A4 Cabriolet. She switches it off. And that really is the best answer.

If you do need to talk – make sure it’s hands-free. Because the newly introduced Careless Driving Law, part of the Road Safety Act, could have a huge impact on small business owners and staff.
