91 – LED headlamps light up the way

Share

9 December 2008

The all-new Audi R8 V10 might be ripping up the tarmac because of its astonishing pace. But lighting its way are lightweight and fuel-efficient LED headlamps.

It’s the first ever application where LED-only headlamps have been used. The high intensity diodes can be used for both low beam and high beam settings. And for daytime running lights and indicators.

No wonder, despite the 5.2-litre V10 engine’s 525PS power output, the R8 can still manage 20.6mpg fuel economy.

I once ran a three-year-old Audi S6 with a 2.3-litre five-cylinder engine turbocharged to 230PS. I loved it. It was green. Had Alcantara leather. And went like a rocket.

Unfortunately my accountant wasn’t of the same persuasion. It went eventually. But the fuel consumption was generally around the 12mpg mark. At best 15mpg. And here we have a sports car that is now capable of 0-62mph in under four seconds. Yet it does over 20mpg! It’s fantastic how technology is shaping such progress.

The new Audi R8 V10 will also form the basis of a sports racing car. It will take part in the GT3 class against Porsche GT3s and the like; an appearance at the famous Le Mans 24 Hours race is also possible.
