Expect the Honda HR-V to be very business car friendly with both a petrol electric hybrid and the excellent 1.6 diesel bringing rock bottom company car tax

LAST year we reported on a new SUV revealed at the Tokyo Motor Show, that we believed would preview an all-new baby Honda CR-V.

Well, our suspicions have been confirmed this week, as the company revealed plans to launch a company car-friendly Honda HR-V – with lower emissions and even better fuel economy than its bigger brother.

If the larger Honda CR-V is anything to go by, the HR-V could return as much as 70mpg

The new model will go on sale in the US later this year, with plans to bring it to Europe scheduled for 2015. That means company car drivers will be able to benefit from a cheap-to-run, versatile yet compact Honda SUV as early as this time next year.

Jeff Conrad, senior vice president and GM of Honda automobile US, said: “Both Fit (badged as the Jazz in the UK) and HR-V demonstrate how great things can come in small packages, and no one does this better than Honda.”

The previous-generation Honda HR-V was killed off in 2005, but was only ever available with a 1.6-litre petrol engine. In contrast, the new model is expected to feature both petrol and diesel options, as well as a petrol-electric hybrid – likely to be a favourite for company car drivers.

As before, the Honda HR-V is likely to be offered with part-time four-wheel drive for when the going gets tough, but will hopefully be capable of more than the original model’s dismal 32mpg. If the larger Honda CR-V is anything to go by, the HR-V could return as much as 70mpg, while emitting sub-120g/km of CO2.
