VOLKSWAGEN has opened UK order books for the new VW Golf estate. Prices start at £17,915, a premium of £765 compared with equivalent hatchback models.
This latest estate looks set to play a much more important role in the Golf range than its predecessors.
Previous estates have been introduced much later in the model cycle of the underlying hatch and haven’t always offered a full spread of engines and equipment.
This one provides buyers with almost as much choice as the hatch, with one exception – Volkswagen is unlikely to offer a Golf GTI estate to take on Ford’s Focus ST load-lugger.
A separate fuel-saving BlueMotion model with a 110PS 1.6-litre diesel engine will also go on sale before the end of the year.
That one delivers a very business friendly 85.6mpg and has a company car tax rate of 13 percent – about as low as it gets for a diesel.
The latest VW Golf estate is also bigger than before, offering a very generous 605 litres of load-space even with the rear seats in place, and Volkswagen has decided to inject a bit of style too, lifting this car above the rather basic, boxy looks of previous Golf estates.
Trim levels and engine options closely follow the pattern established by the recently-introduced hatches.
