Audi A8 4.2 V8 TDI road test report

Audi A8 4.2 TDI quattro SE Executive

Audi A8 4.2 TDI quattro SE Executive

What is it?

LATEST luxury Audi A8 with an armoury of technological wizardry and fuel reducing features, including energy recuperation. This is the 4.2 V8 diesel model, complementing the 3.0 TDI V6 version. Cost £66,450 on the road.

What’s hot?

  • Lightweight aluminium construction for weight saving
  • Adaptive air suspension cossets and glides over roads
  • All-wheel drive quattro grip
  • High level of interior comfort features…
  • …including optional front seat massage function and cooling
  • Massive reserves of torque provide smooth low-down response…
  • …and then propels the car towards the horizon with giddying speed
  • Good to be driven in…and to drive when in the mood
  • Plenty of space in the rear seats
  • New MMI control system and sat nav much easier to use
  • Brilliant adaptive lighting system for safer night driving
  • Big engine surprisingly fuel efficient

What’s not?

  • You need to specify auto door closing…
  • …because air tight interior requires a big tug when closing door
  • Boot space not as good as A6
  • Styling is highly conservative
  • Rather emotionless interior and character
  • Chauffeur companies would be better off with 3.0 TDI model

Business Car Manager Road Test Rating

It’s hard not to marvel at this car. The depth of its abilities and technological features are astonishing, and its capacity to reward the driver or cosset the passenger are enormous. And, yet, for all that, this 4.2 A8 feels slightly soulless and detached. For most business purposes, too, the 3.0 TDI V6 offers a similar but less costly alternative.
