Even with November approaching the a convertible version of the new BMW 4 Series looks irresistible

THE new BMW 4 Series Convertible isn’t typical company car territory, but given the popularity of the 3 Series Convertible there is sure to be more than a passing interest in BMW’s latest droptop.

The business-friendly diesel 420d is the cheapest in the range – at £36,675

It’s based on the new BMW 4 Series, the all-new model that replaces the BMW 3 Series Coupe and Convertible – read BMW 4 Series Coupe debuts at Frankfurt

The 4 Series Convertible comes with a folding metal roof which can be raised or lowered at speeds of up to 8mph in just 20 seconds.

And for the 350 days in the UK that aren’t warm and sunny, BMW now offers an Air Collar system, which gently blows warm air on to the back of your neck. Anything Mercedes-Benz and Peugeot can do…

Three engines will be available at launch, two petrol and one diesel – the latter of most interest to business car users.

The 420d SE offers 55.4mpg on a combined cycle – rising to 58.9mpg if fitted with the eight-speed automatic transmission – and 133g/km CO2 (127g/km for the auto). It’s the cheapest of the range, with prices starting from £36,675.

The 4-Series is significantly lower and wider than the 3-Series coupe – a look that’s migrated very successfully to the convertible

If you fancy putting the 420d Convertible auto through the business, it will sit in the 21% company car tax band for the 2014/15 tax year.

The BMW 4 Series Convertible’s level of standard specification is very good. All models have:

  • front and rear parking sensors;
  • heated electric front seats;
  • Servotronic steering;
  • a multi-function steering wheel;
  • xenon headlights;
  • DAB digital radio;
  • Dakota leather upholstery;
  • dual-zone climate control;
  • cruise control;
  • Bluetooth connectivity; and
  • a 6.5-inch colour screen.
