IF you’re worried about leasing a new diesel car, then rest assured, despite some of the media froth about ‘dirty diesels’, the latest Euro 6 diesel technology is clean.
But BMW has decided to make it squeaky clean.
From spring 2018, virtually all BMWs will feature standard BMW BluePerformance technology, which might sound waffly but actually means you get:
- an SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) catalytic converter with AdBlue injection for diesel engines
This is already standard on many models but will now be added to all BMW 1 Series, BMW 2 Series, BMW 3 Series and BMW 4 Series models. The only model to miss out is the BMW X1xDrive25d
So what does an SCR do? Basically squirts urea (aka AdBlue) in to the exhaust manifold and NOx is converted into harmless nitrogen and oxygen. Hurrah! Nothing dirty there.
But it’s not just the BMW diesel engines that are being improved. Because there’s always room for improvement as we all know. In this case the petrol engines get a brush up.
From March 2018 all new BMW petrol cars will feature the latest petrol engine particulate filter for optimum performance. This exhaust gas purification technology was first introduced in July 2017 on the BMW 2 Series Coupé and Convertible but will now also feature on the
- BMW 420i Coupé /BMW 420i xDrive,
- the BMW 430i Coupé /BMW 430i xDrive Coupé,
- the BMW X1 sDrive18i and
- the plug-in hybrid sports car BMW i8 Coupé and Roadster.
And finally, nothing to do with clean engines, but BMW are very pleased with themselves.
Because the BMW 5 Series Saloon has just won ‘Best Executive Car’ and the BMW 5 Series Touring was named ‘Best Estate Car’ at the recent UK Car of the Year Awards (left).
They asked us to mention it. So we have.
Congratulations BMW.
