LPG: cheaper and cleaner

Convert your car to run on LPG and shave 40% off your fuel bill argues Chris Taylor from Autogas.

FOR small businesses hit by high fuel prices, LPG could hold the answer. It’s approximately half the price of petrol and converting a car to run on LPG need not be a lengthy or costly process.

Most petrol-powered cars and even light commercial vehicles can be easily converted to run on LPG. Running on LPG can cut the fuel bill by up to 40%.

LPG is the most widely available alternative fuel in the UK, with approximately 1,400 public refuelling sites.

It costs around £1,800 to convert a vehicle to LPG. Based on current fuel prices and an annual mileage of 20,000 in a Renault Laguna Sport Tourer 2.0 140, it would take about 22 months to recoup this initial cost.

LPG also offers environmental benefits. An LPG vehicle produces typically 17% less carbon dioxide than petrol and 2% less than diesel. It also produces significantly less NOx than petrol and diesel.

As well as lower fuel costs, running a vehicle on LPG can include a reduction in Vehicle Excise Duty and exemption from the London congestion charge. It may even increase the vehicle’s residual values.

How to convert to LPG

Conversions should always be carried out by an LPGA-approved installer, who will comply with set safety standards, have undergone extensive training and examinations, and be able to advise you on the most suitable system for your vehicle.

There are about 200 registered in the UK so finding an approved installer is easy. There is a full list on our website.

Once you have chosen your installer, you can enjoy the benefits in a matter of days. The conversion involves installing a small tank for the LPG. This is usually sited where the spare wheel would go so that boot space isn’t sacrificed. A space-saver spare wheel is carried instead.

To complete the process, you will need to inform your insurance company and the DVLA that your vehicle has been converted.
