Smart choice? Car-sharing service car2go expands in London

THE car-sharing service car2go, owned by Daimler and Europcar, is expanding its area of operations in London.

The car2go service was originally launched in London’s Islington and Sutton boroughs.

the new areas will be served by 500 Smart cars

But car2go is now being expanded to cover a much larger area of South London, taking in Wimbledon, Raynes Park, Kingston, Richmond, South Lambeth, South Southwark and Croydon. The car2go service in Newham will be suspended as demand is higher elsewhere.

The new areas of coverage will be served with a fleet of 500 diesel-powered Smart Micro Hybrid Drive (mhd) vehicles; vehicles can be rented and parked in a legal unrestricted parking area, rather than a fixed rental station.

“Many Londoners have already started to use this new on-demand way of travelling around the city,” said Stefan Mueller, CEO of car2go Europe GmbH.

“Expanding our free-floating business area allows us to offer the car2go service to even more people.”

Including London, the car2go service is now available in nineteen cities worldwide.

In the UK, car2go service is also available in Birmingham.

Car sharing services like car2go allow small businesses to use vehicles on demand – rather than supporting a company car or pool car in the business. Car2go charges members 35p per minute.

Recently the UK’s market-leading car sharing business, Zipcar, expanded its sphere of influence with the first airport location. Read Zipcar expands car sharing into City Airport.
