What is it?

CITROEN’S answer to the MINI. Cute-looking DS3 is the first in a new range of DS-badged models – to include the DS4 SUV and DS5 saloon – and is designed to be fun to drive and easy to personalise with an array of options. Just like the MINI in fact. Wide range of diesels and petrols, priced from just £11,700. Tested here in £13,700 120bhp DStyle trim.

What’s hot?

  • Bold shape stands out from the crowd
  • Interior is Citroen’s best yet, with high quality materials
  • Well priced, this model undercuts its Cooper rival
  • Smooth 120bhp 1.6 offers decent thrust…
  • …returns 47.9mpg and emits 136g/km
  • Surefooted handling with good agility
  • Refined and comfortable on the motorway
  • More space in the back and in the boot than a MINI
  • Myriad roof, wheel, wing mirror and cabin paint options…
  • Pre-paid service deal like MINI’s TLC package

What’s not?

  • Image not as good as the MINI
  • This model isn’t as efficient or as cheap to tax as a Cooper either
  • Steering has an over-strong self-centring effect and little feel
  • Residuals unlikely to be as solid as the MINI
  • Gearshift a little vague

Business Car Manager Road Test Rating

Well done Citroen. The DS3 is a great effort. It might not be quite as good to drive as a MINI, but it’s still fun, well made and well priced. It’s also usefully more spacious as well. Highly recommended.
