Citroen hope to crack the executive business sector this time with DS 5

3 April 2012

Citroen is making its most determined bid so far with the introduction of its new DS 5 to break into the executive car sector where it has spectacularly failed in the past.

Using an electric motor to power the back wheels it reduces the energy required from the diesel engine which is left to power the front pair, and by fitting 17-inch wheels and tyres it slips in below the 100 g/km ceiling with a 99 g/km figure if you order the DSign Hybrid.

New DS5 combines bold styling with a luxurious aviation-inspired interior featuring a cockpit roof and pilot-style cabin five doors, five full-size seats and up to 465-litres of boot space.

Créative Technologie includes keyless access & start, smart beams, a colour head-up display and a new Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS).

New Citroën DS5 is available with a choice of four refined and efficient Euro V engines – THP 200, e-HDi 110, HDi 160 and the new 200hp diesel electric Hybrid4. There are DSign, DStyle and DSport trim levels.

The first production Citroën fitted with diesel hybrid technology, while DS5 Hybrid4 models deliver outstanding performance, low CO2 emissions from just 99g/km and savings of up to 35% during urban driving thanks to its front drive diesel engine and rear drive electric motor.

The efficient system offers significant financial benefits to both retail and business customers. As well as aiding fuel economy, the sub-100g/km model is exempt from the London congestion charge and, for business users, the BiK tax rate is just 10% and it costs £27,600.

The power is split between a 163bhp diesel engine and a 37bhp electric motor fitted to the rear axle. The gearbox is an automated six-speed manual and there are four operating modes.

AUTO is activated by default on start up, and optimises fuel consumption by automatically switching between the diesel engine and the electric motor.

ZEV for speeds up to 37mph enables the car to be driven using the electric motor only, SPORT uses the electric motor in tandem with the diesel engine to provide extra power 4WD delivers power through all four wheels for rough ground or in low-grip conditions. The 13-model range is priced from £22,400 to £32,200.

The arrival of this new business car will be keenly watched by the industry and it will be interesting to see how it slots into the company car management structure.
