FAR too many business drivers are risks on the road, and the companies that employ them are doing too little about it.

Collisions involving business drivers regularly result in their employers going to court to answer breaches of the Health and Safety at Work Act.

Last year, shockingly, figures revealed that four in 10 employers didn’t have driver policies in place and only half had completed the legally required organisational risk assessment.

Just one in three employers provided any kind of driver education to try and reduce crashes while the vast majority didn’t know their obligations towards the ‘grey’ fleet – employees using their own cars for business journeys.

All of which may leave you wondering just how well, or otherwise, your company looks after its drivers – and now is the time to find out.

These troubling findings were all taken from the 2013 version of the ‘Trends and Attitudes in Business Driver Safety’ survey compiled by Fleet21, the organisation seeking to improve safety standards in business car management.

Now the 2014 survey is underway, in conjunction with Volvo and Specsavers, and anyone involved in small fleet management, occupational safety, or accident costs is being invited to complete the survey and help build an accurate picture of the current trends in this vital area.

According to Fleet21 almost 1000 employers contributed to last year’s report which helped driver risk managers understand how their peers were currently addressing the hot issues, where they felt the focus was going to be in the coming 12 months, and where they felt the industry needed additional knowledge to improve results.

This year’s survey will produce a white paper on the findings, and all contributors will receive a free copy prior before it is officially published.

All employers who take part will also be entitled to a free employer road risk assessment, as legally required under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999. Fleet21 normally charges £195 for this service.

Finally, everyone who completes the employer road risk assessment will be entered into a draw to win a free tailored risk management app worth £3,000, which the firm’s drivers will be able to download to their smartphones.
