Vauxhall Ampera
The Vauxhall Ampera is a range extended electric car. It can go up to 300 miles between charges or re-fuelling

HOW do you generate savings in your business mileage, without suffering the range-anxiety associated with an electric car?

By adding a small fleet of Vauxhall Ampera extended-range electric vehicles (E-REV), of course.

thanks to CO2 emissions of 27g/km, the Ampera’s company car tax rate is just 5 percent

Edmundson Electrical, one of the UK’s first suppliers of electricity and electrical equipment, has invested in three of the plug-in hybrid Amperas. They’ve sparked a lot of interest from the company car drivers….

Barking office Branch Manager, Jo Ellis, said: “I rely on my car for work and cover a relatively high mileage each month including a daily commute of over 35 miles from my home to the office. The E-REV technology in the Ampera means I get all of the benefits of an electric car but with none of the disadvantages such as range-anxiety. It feels just like a normal car.”

Ever since the Ampera’s launch last year, hype and interest around the car has been…. electric. The range-extending ‘hybrid’ drives like any normal car. It can cover up to 50 miles on battery power alone but unlike conventional electric cars, when the batteries run out of power, a petrol generator kicks in seamlessly to give an additional 250 miles of range.

What’s more, thanks to CO2 emissions of 27g/km, the Ampera’s company car tax rate is just 5 percent.

This means a 20 percent tax payer will pay just £349 per year, or £699 at 40 percent.

A BMW 320d EfficientDynmaics, by comparison, carries a 17% company car tax banding and will cost £964 and £1928 per year respectively.

It’s not just Ellis who is buzzing about the Ampera’s positives, though. “Colleagues and friends have also commented on how smooth and quiet the electric motor is and were surprised that it feels like a normal car”, he said.

The other two Amperas are on their way. The first will join the St Helen’s office, with a second set to arrive at the Twickenham branch.

Electric hybrid range extenders like the Ampera have many of the benefits of an all-electric car – quiet, low company car tax, Congestion Charge exemption, and incredibly low cost per mile – but without the limited range anxiety. SMEs with small fleets, especially in urban areas, are increasingly looking at hybrids and range extenders as alternatives to diesels.
