  • Users pay just £1 and refuel vehicle supplied with full tank
  • Online bookings only
  • Scheme moves vehicles to rental locations as needed without expense of lorry transport
  • Clients get no choice of vehicle and must select from choice of routes, times and destinations

EUROPCAR OneWay is an innovative  ‘£1 one-way’ rental solution being launched, available exclusively online on its websites.

Aimed at younger customers with lower budgets but more flexible travel plans, it is launched initially at £1 in the UK and for one euro in France and Italy, and to be rolled out soon to other countries where the group operates.

Europcar explains on its website: “You may think there is some kind of catch. But don’t worry, there is a logical reason behind our crazy offer!

“Often we need to re-locate a vehicle, to be ready for the next rental or to return it to the manufacturer at the end of its lease.

“Transporting the vehicle by truck is very expensive, so if you can bring the vehicle to where we need it, we charge you only £1  and we both benefit!”

The scheme solves Europcar’s operation needs to move vehicles around the country to be in the right locations to optimise its service as well as offering a low-cost mobility solution to younger drivers who, apart from the token £1, just pay for the fuel they use and basic protection.

Clients, who must be aged over 21 with the appropriate licence and comply with certain terms and conditions, don’t get a vehicle choice and they can’t just pay and go but make their selection from routes and times available.

However for the symbolic price they do get the newest models on the Europcar fleet with a full tank of fuel for “one-way” trips lasting 24 to 72 hours at the end of which they must refill the tank.

They can find out which routes are available simply by visiting the oneway website. An interactive map shows at a glance the cities where routes begin. The user can just click on one of these cities and all the available routes are displayed together with dates.

Fabrizio Ruggiero, Europcar’s head of mobility and member of the management board, said: “OneWay is a perfect illustration of Europcar’s innovation DNA and strategy aimed at tomorrow’s mobility concerns.

“We are now glad to be offering OneWay in response to the expectations of a younger clientele looking for flexibility and competitive pricing, but appreciative of Europcar’s service standards. In addition, OneWay is an opportunity for us to move cars around optimally.”
