Messy attempt to keep out the weather after the side-screen shattered on the M11

I LIKE my business motoring to be uneventful.

So the 8 months I’ve spent covering 12,000 mainly business miles in the SEAT Exeo have been just fine. The only thing that’s gone wrong is a number plate light.

It’s pleasing to drive, the cabin is a pleasant place to be, and although the phone connection isn’t among the best I’ve used the satnav is.

It always does over 45mpg and because of the neat little gauge inside the car, I haven’t even had to check the tyre pressures, let alone worry about replacing any tyres.

So I felt unreasonably let down when my peace was shattered on the M11 last week.

Literally shattered because after a loud bang the driver’s side window had been broken by a loose stone. Hardly the car’s fault.

Windscreens don’t do this any more. If you break one it may crack pretty spectacularly, but they don’t ‘craze’ so that you can’t see through them.

But my side window did just that. It’s not as bad as suddenly losing vision out of the windscreen but it’s still very disconcerting not to be able to see what’s happening alongside you.

W.J. King’s SEAT dealership in Sidcup fixed it for me – it took a couple of days – and it was returned sparkly clean and without a trace of broken glass.

My business mileage has returned to uneventful and normal again.
