Ford S-MAX 2.0 EcoBoost SCTi Titanium X Sport test
Ford S-MAX: desirable Titanium X Sport trim

Ford S-MAX 2.0 EcoBoost SCTi Powershift 240PS Titanium X Sport auto

What is it?

TOP-RANGE version of Ford’s sporty S-MAX, with new EcoBoost engine in 240PS trim (there is a 203PS model at Titanium grade) and smooth-shifting six-speed auto. Priced at £28,895.

What’s hot?

  • An MPV you don’t have to justify. Or make apologies for
  • Sporty good looks, especially this Titanium X Sport trim
  • Great interior flexibility: five-seater with boot…
  • …or occasional seven-seater with smaller load area
  • Middle row of seats move backwards and forwards…
  • …and passengers sit higher for brilliant view (kids will love it)
  • There’s also a panoramic roof to provide light and airy interior
  • Good quality fit and interior
  • Touch screen sat-nav is good (worth the £1250 option price)…
  • …which also includes colour reversing camera
  • Standard parking sensors are useful feature for tight spaces
  • Innovative umbrella handbrake saves space
  • EcoBoost engine is serenely quiet on M-Ways
  • And there’s plenty of mid-range boost
  • Excellent Quickclear heated windscreen means instant defrosting
  • Misfuelling eradicated thanks to standard Ford Easy Fuel

What’s not?

  • EcoBoost engine can feel flat-footed off boost
  • And like all Ford engines gets vocal at the top end
  • Front wheels can squirm and tug under acceleration
  • Firmer Sport suspension not to all tastes
  • Falls the wrong side of the 160g/km write-down tax break
  • Expect about 28mpg in all-round driving conditions

Business Car Manager Road Test Rating

The Ford S-MAX is an excellent execution of an occasional seven-seater. Its key attractions are those looks: sporty styling disguises practical nature of this car. The TDCi diesel is the more obvious option for most business users and company car drivers – rather than this high emission model (but worth looking out for it as an ex-demo car from Ford dealers). Either way, the S-MAX is a top choice for user-choosers who want stylish looks, a good to drive car, and real practicality thrown in for good measure.
