Ford Tourneo Custom car review – carry 8 in perfect comfort

The Ford Tourneo Custom is a hugely practical 8-seater and although it’s based on a van, you’d never know it behind the wheel.

This is the heart of the matter – room for 8 or 9 people and with sliding doors on both sides so that they can get in and out

What’s hot?

  • Van-based, but car-like driving dynamics
  • Powerful Dagenham-built 2.2 litre, 155PS at 3500rpm turbodiesel engine is well up to the job of hauling an eight-strong load. Lots of torque too, peaking at 385Nm at 1600rpm
  • Combined average fuel economy at 43.5mpg is more frugal than you might expect
  • Can run on up to 7 percent Bio diesel
  • Convenience of twin sliding side doors for easy loading of passengers
  • Curvy lines and good aerodynamics, it isn’t shaped like a house-brick
  • Door mirrors have a built-in blind spot eliminator, plus they’re heated and electrically foldable
  • Nine-seat version also available, with three seats in all three rows (Extra seat a £115 option)
  • Car-size footprint on the road, 4972mm long and 1986mm wide (plus the mirrors)
  • Pre-tensioner seatbelts and also front, side and curtain airbags
  • Cruise control is standard, with adjustable speed limiter
  • Front and rear parking sensors also standard to ease manoeuvring in tight spaces
  • Theatre-style dimming for the rear courtesy lights
  • Shift indicator on dash to assist with achieving good fuel economy
  • Auto headlamps, rain sensing wipers and daytime running lights
  • Standard 16-inch alloys with locking wheel nuts
  • Perimeter alarm and remote locking
  • Ford SYNC with Emergency Assist and audio streaming, also remote controls on steering wheel
  • Ford Easy-Fuel capless fuelling system to prevent misfuelling

What’s not?

  • It’s tall, so you have to clamber up into it, but at least it’s via side steps that come as standard
  • Not much luggage space with all eight seats occupied
  • It has a cooler image than a van in the company car park, but not as cool as a traditional car
  • You have enough seats for all your immediate colleagues, including ones you don’t particularly like
  • Doesn’t come with built-in sat nav
