The most common cause of serious accidents are drivers failing to look, making mistakes or driving in a hurry according to Department for Transport figures.

While the months October to January are statistically more dangerous, the highest proportion of serious accidents each year – 53% – happen in daylight, on dry roads and in clear weather.

Ice and snow play a part in only 1% of fatal crashes.

It makes driving on business a more hazardous occupation than coal mining.

“The advice is aimed at all motorists, but it is particularly relevant to Britain’s business drivers who collectively clock up billions of working miles each year,” said Mark Sinclair, head of Alphabet.

“By offering employers as many free copies as they need, we hope to ensure that these easy-to-follow but potentially lifesaving tips reach a wide audience, including those who drive their private cars on business as well as company vehicle users.”
