How to be a safe commuter

Driving in your daily commute can be a bit of a blur. Sharpen up – concentrate!

HERE’s a feeling familiar to many business drivers I suspect: you arrive at the office and realise that you can’t remember a thing about the journey you’ve just made.

It’s scary when you think about it. Driving on ‘autopilot’ is all too easy to do, but it’s dangerous especially when you think that you certainly won’t be the only one. So what can you do to make the daily commute safer?

It’s not directly related to staying alert, but keeping everything maintained is a good start.

Make sure your washer bottle is topped up and that your windscreen and windows are clean. This is especially important at commuter times because that’s when the sun is likely to be low in the sky.

Check your tyre pressures too, and keep an eye on tread depth – this must be at least 1.6 millimetres – so at least if you have to take avoiding action there’s something reliable underneath you.  You should also keep the oil at the right level and check all of your lights work.

And use those lights! How often do we see people driving along in poor conditions with no headlights. Just because it’s light enough for you to see where you’re going doesn’t mean you don’t need them. The point is to be visible to other road users.

Driver behavior is a particular problem because everyone’s on the road at the same time.

People get tired and frustrated and and this can make them behave unpredictably. Look out for sudden lane changes. Spot drivers who are behaving erratically and try to anticipate them.
