Hyundai i40 1.7 CRDi SE Nav Saloon review

What is it?

A revised version of the Hyundai i40 saloon, with changes to the interior and exterior styling, plus tweaks to the 1.7 CRDi diesel engine, equalling more power, improved consumption and lower CO2. Good for the company car driver then!

What’s hot?

  • The i40 saloon was always a great looking car choice if rather overshadowed by the highly competent and more popular i40 estate – so the facelift changes freshen it up and bring it in-line with the rest of the range. Exterior changes include the new hexagonal grille and headlights. There is also a selection of new alloy wheel designs and colours.
  • Inside, the changes for the i40 are perhaps less obvious – but very welcome none the less. The more modern materials feel higher quality, plus there’s a revised navigation system with what Hyundai claim is a more responsive seven-inch touchscreen and a new LCD display between the main dials. DAB radio fans will also be pleased, as it’s fitted for the first time across the i40 range.
  • If you don’t pick the i40 for how it looks and drives, you’ll pick it for the impressive list of standard equipment, which includes dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, sat-nav, 16-inch alloy wheels and a parking camera.
  • On the road, the face-lifted i40 is a refined performer, with just a distant hum from diesel engine audible even at speed. The suspension is equally refined, remaining pleasingly unaffected, by all but the largest pot holes too on the standard 16-inch alloy wheels.
  • All i40s are now badged BlueDrive and our test car, which was powered by the 139bhp 1.7-litre diesel, is 5bhp more than before, yet this i40 boasts emissions of just 114g/km equalling road tax of just £30 per year.
  • The 114g/km emissions results in the 20% company car tax band for 2015/16.
