What is it?
MOVE over for the redoubtable Land-Rover Defender 90, the 4×4 icon that’s ready for anything the world can throw at it.
Yes, the Defender, the modern incarnation of the original 1948 Land-Rover, is still alive and well, although with production set to end in Solihull this December, the finishing line seems to be within sight, marking the end of a legendary run.

As the countdown to the ‘new’ Defender gets under way, happily the original can still be bought in a multitude of forms (13 different body variations in all) with this 90 Station Wagon and longer wheelbase 110 leading the way. Underneath, the much loved L-R workhorse formula remains the same as ever, built up around that massively strong 4×4 chassis, designed for the most inhospitable of all-terrain driving conditions.
On top is one of the most recognisable shapes in motordom today. Inside, the square-rigged Defender 90 is as tough, simple and unremittingly utilitarian as ever: rubber mats and few frills although Land Rover does seem to be on board with the trend for luxury Defenders, as our test car’s shapely Ebony/Pimento contrast leather premium seats and uprated audio system go to show.
Equipped with a 2.2-litre turbodiesel and heavy duty 6-speed manual box, this Defender Station Wagon XS comes with a P11D rating of £30,225. Although the Defender has a huge and dedicated fan base, this Ancient Briton would probably not be most people’s idea of an ideal company car.
