Mazda MX-5 1.5SE-L Nav review

What is it?

Shorter and lighter than ever before, this is the entry-level engine version of the all-new fourth-generation Mazda MX-5 – in mid-range SE-L Nav trim.

What’s hot?

  • Our test MX-5 has the least powerful 129 bhp engine, but that shouldn’t put you off. Throttle response is pleasingly crisp and the 1.5 SkyActiv engine is very willing to rev hard, works well with the slick, short-throw six-speed manual gearbox and performance is best described as swift. 60mph acceleration comes up in 8.9 seconds and the top speed is 129mph. With the hood down, it sounds suitably fruity too.
  • Despite being a bit of a performer, the 1.5-litre SkyActiv engine is still capable of 47.1.mpg on the combined cycle and has CO2 emissions of 139 g/km.
  • In our opinion, the fourth-generation MX-5 is the best looking since the iconic 90’s original. The shorter, lower dimensions make for a better proportioned design than before. We’re also fans of the Kodo design-inspired small, slashed, more aggressive front headlights and grille. The rear styling isn’t as successful, but the way the manual roof folds flat is neat.
  • Inside, like other recent Mazda launches, quality seems to have taken a step up in the new MX-5. The plastics aren’t too shiny, the switchgear feels well-made, we like the stitched part of the dashboard and the standard sat-nav of our test car was easy to operate.
  • The weight-saving in the fourth-generation MX-5 is most obvious on the road; we drove the 2.0-litre Sport on 17-inch wheels after this 1.5 and it didn’t feel as lightweight or as focussed. Yes, there’s more body roll in corners, but the steering felt sharper and more precise.
  • Considering the performance, the fact this Mazda sports car produces just 139g/km emissions, means this MX-5 falls into the 22% company car tax band for 2015/16.
