What is it?

The Mercedes E220d SE is the smaller-engined diesel version of the all-new E-Class saloon that was launched this year. On top of the curvy new look, the latest challenger to the 5-Series crown boasts a comfortable, state-of-the-art interior.

Of more interest to business buyers is the SE’s unbelievable 102g/km emissions figure – but do such low emissions compromise this Mercedes in everyday use? We headed out on the road to find out.

What’s hot

• The E220’s 1.9-litre turbo diesel, which boasts 0-62mph acceleration in just 7.3 seconds and a licence-losing top speed of 149mph.Yet, despite the performance, the 72.4mpg consumption, 102g/km emissions and 20% charge, are sure to appeal to business buyers.
• Okay, so the 17-inch alloys looked a bit lost under the arches of our test car, but with the curvy looks and intricate front headlight design and the silver paint finish, even the entry-level SE looks sharper and more modern than the rest of the executive class rivals.

• Inside, it’s hard not to spot influences from its big brother, the S-Class limo, with the horizontal instrument area, leading on to the sat-nav screen. Even on this entry-level model, the build quality feels impressive, we also like the curvy silver centre to the dash, leading on to the doors and finally, the simple uncluttered centre console. It is spacious inside too, with plenty of room for three adults to travel in comfort in the back – the boot is massive too.
• With the small wheels, the ride on this E-Class is impressively comfortable and compliant. We also like the smooth way the nine-speed automatic motors through the gears.

What’s not 

• The E220d’s 1.9-litre diesel might be willing and impressively efficient, but it’s noisy at idle and under heavy acceleration.
• Although much improved over its predecessor, the steering and handling are not as involving or ultimately as enjoyable as rivals such as the current BMW Five-Series.
• The E220d might be cost-effective to run, but it’s still not cheap to buy, with the basic £35,935 list price without options!

 Verdict on Mercedes E220d SE

If emissions, consumption and comfort are at the top of your executive business car wish list, then in entry-level form, the Mercedes E-Class should be near the top of your list.

So how does it compare to its key rival – the soon to be replaced BMW 5-Series? Closest model is the 520d SE. The BMW gets off to a good start as it’s cheaper, by a significant £1,770. Although the E220d is more powerful at 194bhp versus 184bhp.

Yet, for an SME the emissions and tax band are going to be key and this is where the Mercedes takes the lead, with 102g/km and a 20% charge versus this BMW’s higher 21% charge and 109g/km emissions.
