Action points for business car managers

If you are in charge of an SME small fleet of company cars you should:

  • be prepared to update your company car policy
  • communicate the changes to your company car drivers
  • consider whether any of your drivers need driver risk training – see our Driving Advice section

The Institute of Advanced Motorists director of policy Neil Greig commented that was “a major change in traffic law enforcement”.

But added: “Without traffic cops out on the road to enforce this new approach it will have little impact on road safety.”

Middle lane driving and poor lane discipline add to the problem of traffic flow, congestion, and unpredictable journey times, identified by the Department of Transport as detrimental to both the economy and the environment.

What does the Highway Code say about middle lane use?

“You should always drive in the left-hand lane when the road ahead is clear. If you are overtaking a number of slower-moving vehicles, you should return to the left-hand lane as soon as you are safely past.” Lane Discipline, Highway Code
