COMPANY car drivers rejoice, the brand new Volvo XC40 premium compact SUV has arrived. Volvo has opened the order book with first deliveries due to be scheduled early next year.

This is good news because the Volvo XC range is immensely popular for many very obvious reasons. Mainly because they are excellent in every way, and being a relatively affordable, and luxurious option for many company car drivers doesn’t do Volvo any harm either.

The new XC40 is the first compact SUV from Volvo, the first to be built on the new CMA (Compact Modular Architecture), and the first to be designed primarily for urban driving.

The advanced connectivity, entertainment and safety technology  in the XC40 is borrowed from Volvo’s newest XC60 and XC90 series. That bodes well because Volvo compare very favourably with the rest of the luxury SUV market. It is also powered by Volvo’s efficient Drive-E engines, and can be specified with front- or all-wheel drive, and with manual and automatic gearboxes.

The new Volvo XC40 premium compact SUV will be available in three trim levels, each with an enhanced Pro form.

Entry-level Momentum versions include textile and vinyl interior upholstery and the option of a contrast-coloured white roof and door mirrors, along with white and black alloy wheels. Standard interior equipment includes Volvo’s beautifully designed Sensus 9″ touch screen that works in tandem with the sophisticated voice-activated control system.

Also part of the standard trim are LED headlights, dual-zone climate control , a 12.3″ active TFT configurable driver’s information display and rear parking sensors. Alloy wheels are 18″ as standard, with up to 21″ wheels available as an option.

You can build on this specification with the sportier R-Design or focus on luxury with the Inscription versions.

Regardless of trim levels you can also choose from the three petrol and two diesel engines initially available. All these engines are 2.0-litre, four-cylinder units. The petrol versions are the 156bhp T3, 190bhp T4 and 247bhp T5. Diesel is available as either the 150bhp D3 and 190bhp D4 diesels.

If you opt for the petrol T3 you will only have the option of front-wheel drive and manual transmission. The D3 is offered in front- or all-wheel-drive form, while the T4, T5 and D4 come with all-wheel drive and an automatic gearbox. An automatic gearbox is available on D3 versions too.

The first models of the Volvo XC40 premium compact SUV sold in the UK will be special T5 and D4 First Editions, which are based on R-Design Pro versions with even more equipment as standard. The enhanced First Edition specification adds the Xenium pack, Pilot Assist, a power-operated tailgate with hands free opening and closing, heated rear seats, wireless mobile phone charging and the Harmon Kardon sound system.

Add Volvo’s legendary safety and impressive attention to detail and the next question you should be asking is, where do I sign?
