Clever exhaust technology and pioneering valve design means the Ingenium engine is clean, efficient, and perfectly complements the lightweight aluminium body of the XE, XF, and current “World Car of the Year”, the F-Pace. Pair it with the ZF eight-speed automatic transmission and you get exceptionally smooth acceleration, seamless shifts, and outstanding responses.

Enough technical detail though. Some of you may well know what all of the above means but for most drivers all that really matters is how it performs in the real world. That depends on which particular model you put the engine in but overall it appears to be a very good thing.

If you start with the entry-level XE Sports saloon the new engine will push the car to 60mph in 5.2 seconds, return around 41.5mpg, and emit 157g/km. These are impressive figures that put the XE well within reach of most company car drivers looking for a good balance of performance and efficiency. With prices starting from a touch over £38k the company car tax should be perfectly reasonable too.

Move up the range to the executive XF saloon and the price increases to around £44k. Curiously that seems to be the biggest jump in the numbers because despite the additional weight of all the added extras in the XF the new engine still manages to propel the car to 60mph in just 5.5 seconds. It also returns a healthy 40mpg and emits just 163g/km. Given the minuscule differences it’s likely to be a toss up between the XE and XF as to which proves most popular.

If a saloon is not your thing then you can also specify the same engine in the F-Pace SUV. Price wise the F-Pace is a few hundred pounds more than the XF but it still comes in under £45k so none of them will break the bank tax-wise. The F-Pace even manages to break the 60mph in under 6 seconds and still returns around 37mpg. Strangely there are no emissions figures for the F-Pace as yet but we wouldn’t expect it to be very far from the XF.

Regardless of which model you choose it seems the new 300bhp Ingenium engine offers the best of both worlds. You still get the performance we’ve come to expect from a Jaguar but with all the economic benefits of a state-of-the-art clean, efficient engine.

In fact, when you write it all down we can’t see any compelling reason not to get the new petrol engine, all you need to decide is which particular Jaguar you want it bolted to. If only all of life’s choices were so pleasurable.
