SO this is it, the all-new Hyundai i30, the car that Hyundai claim ‘has been built for everyone.’ However, with its keywords being quality, safety and technology, we’re sure it will be a hit with business buyers too.

The new i30 is certainly the latest in Hyundai’s product assault, with its job together with the rest of the range, for making them the number one Asian brand by 2020.

Hyundai claim to have thought about the people who are going to drive the new i30 and the result majors in practicality with a new emotional design on the outside.

Designed in Europe, we’d say that the new i30’s design looks stronger in the metal than in pictures. Highlights include the bold C-pillar – which we think is reminiscent of the latest Peugeot 308.

Then there’s the low, highly sculpted belt line, muscular wheel arches, lower cut out, plus a long nose featuring a new concave version of the distinctive family grille. These design elements  all go together to give the new small-family Hyundai a strong identity – with a more muscular look than before.

The latest hatch is the first of a family of new i30s including an estate, coupe and even a rumoured baby SUV.

Inside, the most distinctive detail of the new horizontal dashboard design has to be the Mercedes-style floating centre infotainment system, on top of the centre console. This is part of an optional eight-inch touch-screen navigation system.

We understand there’s slightly more space inside the new i30 and it certainly feels as roomy as it was before – bootspace is up to 395 litres, with the practicality of a split/fold rear seat.

It is inside the new i30 where you’ll see the benefit of all the new technology, which includes a dynamic rear camera, Bluetooth, Apple and Android connectivity and even a wireless inductive charging pad for some smartphones.

The new i30 also has to be the safest Hyundai, with a suite of new technologies including Autonomous Emergency Braking, a front collision warning system, smart cruise control, Blind Spot Detection and even a Lane Keeping Assistance system.

For the UK market, we have been told there will be a choice of the new 140PS 1.4-litre and 1.0-litre 120PS GDi petrol turbo engines. Diesel will be taken care of by 110 and 136PS versions of the 1.6 CRD engine. With the choice of six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch transmissions.

Like the new IONIQ – see our road tests – Hyundai are promising new i30s with full electric and hybrid versions. In fact, we were told the hybrid version is very near, with an expected on-sale date of late 2017.

Hyundai hopes the new i30 will offer a more dynamic drive than before, but with the same refined ride. We’d hope so, after all it has been developed on the infamous Nurburgring track!  Handling highlights we’re promised include 10% more direct steering, plus dual lower arm multi-link rear suspension.

Production starts in December, with the UK launch scheduled for February 2017. We’ll bring you more on the all-new i30 when we have it.
