Changes to the engines make them cleaner, more economical, and in some cases more powerful too

Other efficiency measures include the fitment of low rolling resistance tyres, stop/start and battery regeneration systems, while the two big-selling 3.0-litre V6 TDI engine options are now both EU6 emissions compliant, thanks to measures such as the adoption of a SCR-DPF catalytic converter module using the fuel additive AdBlue.

The entry-level 3.0-litre V6 TDI is still rated at 204PS but now returns a combined cycle 42.8mpg and 174g/km of CO2 instead of the previous 40.4mpg and 184g/km.

The more powerful version of the 3.0 V6 unit offers 258PS instead of 245, again with improved fuel efficiency. The V8 diesel and Hybrid models are being dropped from the UK line-up.

Order books for the revised VW Touareg are expected to open in August, with the first deliveries taking place in November.
