- More range from new second generation Leaf – up to 235 miles on a charge
- More power and torque of 320Nm
- e-Pedal tech: accelerate and brake via the accelerator
- Lowest company car tax band – falling to 2% in 2020-21
AN electric car that does over 200 miles on a single charge: you have to admit, that’s quite a tipping point – and exactly what the new generation Nissan Leaf supplies.
It’s the sort of tipping point that really makes you start to think about going green – buying into the electric vehicle thing – very seriously. And the new Nissan Leaf gives you plenty of reasons to persuade you.
And if you’re a company car driver, there’s the prospect of company car tax dropping to just 2% in 2020.
More range, better charging, goes faster
Let’s start with the range on a tankfull of lecky. The old Nissan Leaf did 124 miles; the new Nissan LEAF offers an improved range of 235 miles (378km) on a single charge. That should be enough for most business journeys, but Nissan is promising more CHAdeMO Quick Charging network points in 2018 too.
There’s also a new home-charger than can blitz the battery in two hours.
So it’s quicker to top up with the electric go-juice but it’s also quicker off the mark too. The new e-powertrain delivers 110kW and 320Nm of torque, which is plenty for a fun drive and quick acceleration. And remember, all that torque is available immediately – unlike conventionally fuelled cars.
More tech for safer driving and new e-pedal
The new Nissan Leaf features Nissan’s ProPILOT advanced driver assistance system with autonomous driving features. In slow moving traffic ProPILOT will slow down and bring the Leaf to a halt when traffic flow ceases – all autonomously. It will then start to follow the car in front when the flow resumes. There’s also fully autonomous parking, too, so you can avoid those breathe-in-squeeze-out-the-door-tight-parking-space-moments.
There is also something Nissan calls e-Pedal technology. If you’ve ever driven a bumper car, you’ll understand the sensation – but the e-Pedal allows drivers to start, accelerate, slow down and stop – simply by increasing or decreasing the pressure on the accelerator.
Take your foot off the accelerator completely and the brakes are applied automatically, which also helpfully recharges the battery. The car holds its position, even on steep up and downhill slopes, until the accelerator is pressed again. Nissan says it’s the new stress-buster ball for driving.
It’s not just the tech that’s eye-catching
The new-gen Leaf looks more like – well, a normal, stylish hatchback with dynamic looks. Signature Nissan design cues include boomerang-shaped lamps, V-motion flow in the front, flush-surface grille in clear blue and rear bumper’s blue moulding.
There’s also a redesigned interior. A front panel in the form of a ‘gliding wing’ and vibrant blue stitching in the seats, dashboard and steering wheel, create a relaxed ambience to match the driving eeperience. Meanwhile, the new 7-inch, full-colour (TFT) display highlights key features, including the Safety Shield technology, power gauge and information from the audio and navigation systems. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto have also been integrated for enhanced connectivity.
Special Nissan LEAF 2.ZERO launch edition
To mark this all-new 2nd generation Nissan LEAF, a unique version goes on sale from today (October 02): the new Nissan LEAF 2.ZERO limited edition. This version is the first model in Europe to be fully equipped with Nissan’s ProPILOT technology. Costing £26,490 including Government Grant, cars will be delivered from the beginning of 2018.
(Note to company car drivers – remember, your benefit in kind taxation will be based on the P11D price of the new Nissan Leaf and NOT the price including Government grant.)
Your options for charging up your Nissan Leaf
- The Nissan double speed 7kW home charger – 100% charge in just 5.5 hours – a 70% reduction in charging time from the previous charging technology.
- The Nissan 22kW charger goes even faster – just 2 hours. Designed for business users, the super-fast charger can also be purchased by consumers who want an even quicker charging experience.
- You can also power the grid! Unique bi-directional charging means you can give back energy to power the world around the car by connecting to homes and offices. The Leaf can even return any excess charge to top up and stabilise the local energy grid thanks to Nissan’s innovative Vehicle to Grid technology. Which sounds very sci-fi but very clever too
