To look at, not much different, but underneath there are EU6 compliant 3-cylinder diesels and a 3-cylinder petrol engine for the emissions conscious BlueMotion variant

THE VW Polo is getting a big revamp.

The main news for CO2-emissions-conscious company car drivers is that Volkswagen is making a switch from diesel to petrol for the high-economy BlueMotion model, which gets a new turbocharged three-cylinder 1.0-litre engine producing 90PS.

The three-cylinder in the updated BlueMotion is just one of a series of new Polo engines

The petrol-powered BlueMotion is expected to return a combined 68.9mpg and emits 94g/km of CO2, provisional figures that aren’t quite as good as the 80.7mpg and 91g/km achieved by the out-going 1.2 diesel BlueMotion – although the old car, which churns out 75PS, is less powerful.

Also in petrol the line-up – a 1.0-litre with three cylinders delivering 60 or 75PS, 1.2-litre TSI engines with 90 and 110PS and, as previously, a 1.4-litre with fuel-saving cylinder deactivation technology, although that gets a 10PS power boost to 150PS. A sportier Polo GTI will arrive later on.

On the diesel side, there are two new three-cylinder 1.4-litre TDI engines with 75 and 90PS, which replace the old 1.2 and 1.6-litre diesels. All of the engines in the new range will meet the tough EU6 regulations.
